Netherlands ~ Kimberly’s Top 10

Between the artistic, diverse and progressive Amsterdam with its romantic old world charm, and the industrious modern Rotterdam, coupled with the gorgeous country side, I find the Netherlands one of the most livable nations I frequent, at least as defined by my tastes.  Its  people are athletic and moving, with bicycles being the primary form of transportation and winter sports arenas packed with amateur athletes.  The food is fresh and healthy, with the exception of those deep fried pureed meat thingies they serve at my office luncheons. (Ewww!!) And culturally I find the people to be efficient and ecological with a direct, yet open approach in their communication style.  All that to say, if my company extends an offer for an expat assignment to this region, no thought would be required.  I’d be packed up with my pup and moved in a week!

So, it’s with this level of appreciation that I share my Top Ten for the Netherlands.  I’ve hot linked previous detailed posts on my recommendations if you would like more information…

ONE: Take a Boat Canal Tour of Amsterdam.

TWO: Go to one of the Art Museums in Amsterdam then stroll the arts district and take in the galleries and antique shops.  Van Gogh and the Rijksmuseum museums are very close to one another so it wouldn’t be difficult to do both if you have the time. I like to end that day at an outdoor restaurant near Rembrandt square and people watch with a Heineken.

THREE: Take a day trip to the Keukenof Gardens.

FOUR:  Take a day trip to the Kinderdijk windmills

FIVE:  Tour Europe’s largest sea port in Rotterdam.

SIX:  Go to the top of Rotterdam’s Euromast.

SEVEN:  Visit Anne Frank’s house in Amsterdam.

EIGHT:  For the beer lover, take the Heineken tour.

NINE: Stroll the shops and have lunch in the walking district of Rotterdam

TEN:  If you happen to be in the Netherlands in February, and are brave enough, take on Carnaval in the province of Limburg!

And a couple of items on my itinerary for my next trip; Visit Maduradam the miniature city and visit the street-less village of Giethoorn.

With Amsterdam being home to a major international hub in Schiphol Airport, it’s easy to think of Amsterdam as a “fly through” city.  But don’t do that…fly through, I mean…Stop and stay awhile.  I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised!
