My visit to Dallas begins with my friends pulling a bit of a trick on me. As I’m sure you’ve observed from my posts, my travel style leans luxury. At my age, I’m waaaay past the years of hostels, boxcars, tents and low-cost modalities and my friends know this. Yes, I am in fact, a hotel, food and wine snob and I proudly own it! So, after I’m picked up, we grab a lovely lunch, and proceed to our destination. It’s at the point of passing through the entrance to a park and campground that I turn and say to my friend, “this is where trust kicks in”! Now, I know they know me and would never plop me on a blow up mattress under a lean two, but I’m still sweating it. I’m trying to measure my panic and plan my response in a way that still affirms their kindness while I plot my sneaky exit to the nearest 5 star. I’m picturing a cartoon like departure at night….you know, with the stealthy black cat suit creeping out on tip toes! To my delight, no James Bond tactics were required! They had put me up in this cute little cabin that we affectionately named the “tiny house”.
The Twin Coves Park and Camp Ground is just a few minutes “outside” the city proper on Grapevine Lake in Flower Mound. While my friends put me up in the tiny house, of which there are many to rent, they parked there rock star-esc touring bus on a high-end motor vehicle hook up spot. It’s a beautiful park with vast community spaces, extensive trails both paved and dirt venturing out into the wilderness. It didn’t take long to realize this is a mountain bikers dream.
As I’m typing this post from my tiny deck with a view, it’s hard to reason that I’m only minutes from the city. I feel like I’ve driven for hours and am at a remote Texas outpost, but I’m not. I’m only 10 minutes from all the amenities of a big city. My friends will likely be thrilled that I’m enjoying this spot so much that I had to give it a dedicated post, but they will likely also be worried that this place will get “found out” and become over crowded!
Twin Coves is worth a visit, even if it’s just for a few hours to hike, mountain bike or go boating…it’s a secret gem of a spot!
