UPDATED SEPTEMBER 2019 ~ Let me begin this post by saying that “night life” in Positano is not relegated to clubs. All it takes is a table of friends, a carafe of wine and an impromptu band strolling through your restaurant and suddenly everyone is singing along. Night life can spontaneously erupt at pretty much any time in Positano, or Italy for that matter. Thank goodness for that because my Band-Aid dress, stiletto wearing, nights have long since passed! That said, there are some chic, stylish, grown up places, worth drinking a red bull, to visit at night.
Let’s start with some of my favorites during Aperitivo time. Aperitivo time is the Italian equivalent of a happy hour in the US which includes light snacks, not just peanuts and pretzels. My favorite place for people watching at “prime time” is La Breeza. It’s a little beach front patio bar right on the top of the promenade with the best view of people coming and going. I could sit there for hours people watching with an Aperol spritz chatting with my favorite hostess Imara…I also like to hang out at the newly renamed Blu Bar at the end of the promenade as they have “upped their game” from cantina food to great drinks and a more robust menu, particularly for lunch time nibbles. 2018 brings the advent of the “pop up bar” along the main beach and outside of Music on the Rocks. I wasn’t sure I was going to like this addition to the landscape, but I really do. They are open later with fun music, right on the beach, spectacular views, and lower cost beverages. And for the more elegant and upscale experience with a terrific view of the village, check out Franco’s Bar at Le Sirenuse.
Last year I got turned on to a Sunday night event at La Scogliera’s sea front patio, which isn’t typically open to the general public. A live band starts playing music in the evening, transitions to a DJ and wraps up relatively early by Italian standards around 11:00 – 12:00. The setting is lovely, the energy is celebratory but not “clubby” and you will find a general mix of ages. This spot draws the locals which is particularly fun.
My personal favorite night spot is the Fly Lounge. It’s in a “tower like” structure at the end of the promenade which is also home to Music on the Rocks and Rada. The Fly Lounge is on the top floor of the structure and has an incredible view. This place possesses casual elegance, top shelf adult beverages, and a sing along worthy piano man.
When you leave the Fly Lounge, you’ll walk down two flights of steps that empty into Music On the Rocks, the night club. MOTR is the most stylish rock lined cave I’ve ever been in…This hot spot will be jumping until 6:00 in the morning. And yes, there will be Band-Aid dresses, beautiful people, and as the night progresses, the crowd gets younger. The millennials in Italy don’t go out until 12:00 am. You would be well advised to call ahead and reserve seating if you want to go here for an evening. As with any night club of this caliber, typically bottle service is required for said seating. I’m a few years past a 6:00 am night but spending some time here is not typical “club-land”. People on holiday from all around the world creates a unique experience. I once met a Swedish Prince when I was at MOTR…at least that’s who he said he was! Oh no, I forgot to curtsey!
Great Segway to my next post…
