Remember my “run for the hills” comment regarding the village of Amalfi? I shared how the coastal towns built watch towers to give the villagers a head start from pirates and any other enemies that may attack the city. Where would they run? To the hills…and Ravello is one such place they ran to!
If you’ve heard anything about Ravello it’s “romantic”! I know that’s what I’ve heard, and the heresy is true. It’s a small intimate village perched on the mountains above Amalfi. From that perch, it possesses some glorious views. Some of the best views can be found from the gardens of Villa Rufolo. Richard Wagner, the famous German composer, visited Villa Rufolo in 1880 and was so inspired that he worked the gardens design into the second act of Parsifal. As a tribute to Mr. Wagner, the Villa hosts a concert every summer featuring his music. It’s set in the lower gardens of the villa and the backdrop of the stage is the sea. I was there with friends while they were setting up for it last year and it was unlike any staging I’d ever seen. I imagine it was a magical event with the music, the views, the gardens, lit candles and the fragrance of lemons! The tickets sell out months in advance so I was left to my imagination.
Yes, Ravello has tourists, but it’s considerably slower in pace than Amalfi or Positano. It is an ideal destination for couples who want a quiet, relaxed and intimate setting to spend time together. For me, as a single gal, it’s a great place to visit for an afternoon and to slip out before Rotic-itis sets in. You know, the illness you get from to many Rotic moments. What is that you ask? RoMANtic without the MAN! Simply put, Ravello is made for lovers.
